Animal sounds

What does the cow say? Ask the question, make the sound yourself, then tap to hear the real animal. They’re all real recordings, from farms, homes and the wild.

How to play

  1. Ask your baby, “What does the cow say?”
  2. Answer it yourself, as big and silly as you like: “Moo!”
  3. Tap the question to hear the real cow, then try it together.

Little babies may just watch and listen. Older babies and toddlers might want to answer, or do the tapping. Keep the volume low, and don’t hold the phone right by your baby’s ear.

On the farm

  • Cow

    What does the cow say?

Every cow has a moo of its own. Mother cows and their calves can pick out each other’s calls.

  • Sheep

    What does the sheep say?

In a field full of bleating sheep, a lamb can still find its mum by her voice.

  • Pig

    What does the pig say?

Mother pigs grunt softly to call their piglets when it’s time to feed.

  • Horse

    What does the horse say?

A neigh carries a long way. Horses use it to call to friends they can’t see.

  • Duck

    What does the duck say?

It’s mostly the mother ducks that quack loudly. The drakes make a quieter, raspy sound.

  • Cockerel

    What does the cockerel say?

Cockerels crow in other languages too. In France it’s “cocorico”, and in Germany it’s “kikeriki”.

  • Donkey

    What does the donkey say?

A donkey makes the “hee” as it breathes in and the “haw” as it breathes out.

At home

  • Dog

    What does the dog say?

Dogs don’t say “woof” everywhere. In Japan they say “wan wan”, and in Spain “guau guau”.

  • Cat

    What does the cat say?

Grown-up cats hardly ever miaow to each other. They save it for talking to people.

In the wild

  • Owl

    What does the owl say?

“Twit-twoo” is usually two tawny owls: one calls “ke-wick” and the other answers “hoo-hoo”.

  • Wolf

    What does the wolf say?

Wolves howl to find the rest of their pack, and to tell other wolves to keep away.

  • Lion

    What does the lion say?

A lion’s roar is so loud it can be heard about 8 kilometres (5 miles) away.

  • Tiger

    What does the tiger say?

Tigers can roar, but they greet friends with a soft, puffing snort called a chuff.

  • Elephant

    What does the elephant say?

Elephants trumpet through their trunks. They also rumble too low for us to hear, and other elephants can hear it from kilometres away.

Where the sounds come from

Every sound is a recording that its maker has shared for anyone to use. We’ve cut each one short and evened out the volume.
